Imagine, you are just speeding past in your sweet new ride that you just bought at the luxury dealership, and out of nowhere, you get kicked out of your game and see the red and white crash box on your screen. Sounds frustrating, doesn’t it? Now picture yourself as a cop in the midst of a major shootout on the highway and BAM! All you see is your desktop wallpaper of a fish. If this sounds too familiar to you with your FiveM server, we can help.
Why do crashes happen? That’s a great question that has plenty of answers. There could be a resource overload, where there are way too many assets and resources and not enough server bandwidth to carry them. There could be conflicts between mods or plugins. Some mods are created to only work on specific types of server like ESX or QBcore. These can conflict with other scripts that are made for Vmenu servers. Other issues could be memory leaks or server misconfigurations. There also could be outdated assets or broken dependencies. Some script mods depend on other mods and if one is broken, all of them will be as a result of a chain reaction.
How can you fix these issues? You will want to get to the root cause first. There are several ways to figure out what is causing them. You can gather all of the crash logs and compare the crash codes. If multiple players crash at once, have them share what the error code is. You can look for patterns of crashes, such as when one specific vehicle gets spawned or when players go near a specific part of the map. Maybe there is a broken car or a broken building that needs to be taken out. There are also several tools and commands for live debugging of your server. One tool is the F8 menu in game. Another is the console log through your hosting service. Combined, all of them will tools can be used to find the issues.
Once you have identified what is causing the crashes, you can then adjust your server accordingly. Some good practices for reducing crashes and stabilizing your server are things like prioritizing resources that are well maintained and not broken space-eaters. You can also use server side error checks and versions controls to reduce problems. Keep your server backed up on a regular schedule and use staged testing environments to make sure everything works smoothly.
